The Masters of the Universe reboot has cast its He-Man, and the film’s choice is certainly unexpected.
Noah Centineo will portray Prince Adam/He-Man in the upcoming live-action take on the classic hero, the young actor confirmed during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Centineo shot to fame last year after appearing as a teenage heartthrob in a string of Netflix romantic comedies such as To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, and the just-released The Perfect Date. So how does one go from a hunky high schooler to the superpowered Prince of Eternia? Well, that remains to be seen.
After discussing his recent underwear modeling campaign for Calvin Klein, Centineo told Fallon that he would be playing He-Man in the upcoming blockbuster. “I have an affinity for being in my underwear,” he joked. That may be, but in order to prove he “has the power,” Centineo is likely going to have to bulk up considerably. The 22-year-old doesn’t exactly have the build of a Dolph Lundgren, who portrayed the character in 1987’s Masters of the Universe, or, say, a John Cena, who at one point was rumored to take on the role for the reboot. It’s possible that Centineo would be his regular slim self as Prince Adam, and then CGI would be used to bulk him up when he transforms into He-Man (although, if we’re being honest, Prince Adam has always been pretty jacked, too).
Of course, the casting of someone who looks nothing like He-Man may be entirely intentional on the part of Sony Pictures, and may suggest that the film will be more of a modern reimagining of the property. We’re sure we’ll learn more in the coming weeks about just what this film is going to look like, and until then, we’ll just be holding out hope that they get the kid below to play Skeletor.
Masters of the Universe, directed by Aaron and Adam Nee, is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2020.
