We already knew that classic monsters Mothra, Ghidorah, and Rodan would be joining Godzilla in the upcoming King of the Monsters, but it looks like they’ll have some company in the form of a few brand new Kaiju created just for the film.
During a Q&A at Pasadena’s Monsterpalooza over the weekend, director Michael Dougherty answered fan questions relating to the film, including whether we’d be seeing any monsters other than the big four. “Yes, [there are other Kaiju in the movie],” Dougherty said, according to Bloody Disgusting. “Not other Toho licensed creatures, but some original new ones. Yeah … We’ve expanded the ecosystem a little bit.”
This makes sense given that, in one of the film’s most recent trailers, it’s mentioned that there are 17 known Kaiju in the world. And while it isn’t known whether we’ll actually see all 17 in the film, it is now confirmed that we’ll at least be seeing a few we don’t know about. And while the news of a bunch of new Kaiju is exciting, it also seems to confirm that no additional classic monsters will appear, such as Gamera, who had been rumored to be included in the film (and some even thought they glimpsed him in the film’s first trailer).
Whatever monsters end up making the cut, they’re all going to have to go through Godzilla if they want to become King of the Monsters. And when you come at the king, you best not miss.
