We recently learned that Mark Hamill would be the new voice of Chucky for the upcoming Child’s Play reboot, but despite all the news about the film and the release of the first teaser trailer, we still hadn’t gotten a full look at the new villainous doll. Well, that changes today.
Orion Pictures has unveiled the first full-body shot of Buddi, AKA Chucky, and he definitely doesn’t look like the type of doll you’d want on your shelf. He looks fairly similar to the original Chucky — striped shirt, denim overalls, a shock of red hair — but different enough to tell that this is a new character. He’s less cartoonish-looking than the original, and he has a deeply disturbing uncanny valley quality to his face, which makes sense since he’s a technologically-advanced toy rather than a serial killer’s soul in a doll’s body. However, he does appear to share the same affinity for butcher knives as his predecessor, suggesting that the latest gadgets aren’t always better than the tried and true instruments of terror. Have a look at him below if you don’t care about getting to sleep tonight.
In addition to Hamill, the film stars Aubrey Plaza as a “single mother who gifts her son Andy (Gabriel Bateman) a Buddi doll, unaware of its more sinister nature,” with Brian Tyree Henry as a cop investigating the film’s strange goings-on. The reboot is being produced by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith, who also produced the massively successful It reboot, so it would appear the property is in good hands.
Child’s Play arrives in theaters on June 21, 2019.
