The upcoming Child’s Play reboot just keeps getting better and better, as the film has now added Mark Hamill as the new voice of Chucky.
Hamill is, of course, best known for his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, but he’s also a very accomplished voice actor. After Skywalker, Hamill is arguably best recognized for his long-running role as the voice of Batman villain the Joker in various iterations, beginning with 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series. We’re thinking Hamill’s unhinged, cackling Joker voice would be a perfect fit for an evil doll come to life — and judging from the newly-released audio clip of Hamill’s Chucky laughing, our thinking appears to be correct.
As inspired as the casting is, it’s not entirely unexpected. That’s because Hamill has already voiced Chucky before… well, kind of. It was in a 2005 episode of the Adult Swim series Robot Chicken called “Plastic Buffet,” and in it, Hamill essentially does an impression of original Chucky actor Brad Dourif. In his Wondercon announcement of his casting, Hamill stated that his Chucky would be entirely different than what came before it, so we probably shouldn’t expect a repeat of his Robot Chicken performance.
In any case, we’ll find out just how creepy Mark Hamill’s Chucky is when Child’s Play hits theaters on June 21.
