As awesome as the Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer was, it still was lacking in one department: Monsters. In addition to Godzilla, we know the film features other legendary Kaiju like Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah, but we barely caught glimpses of any of them in the trailer. But now, thanks to some collectibles displayed at Tokyo Comic-Con, we’re getting our first good look at what these decades-old movie monsters will look like in their modern CGI guise.
Toyark managed to obtain some photos from the convention of Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan’s toys, and they all look pretty fantastic. The figures are from Bandai’s collectible S.H. Monsterarts line, and their level of detail is outstanding. You can check them out below.
Mothra
Rodan
Ghidorah
Judging from these photos, it looks like the new film does a good job of keeping the characters’ classic looks while also updating them to look more realistic and scary. Ghidorah probably looks the most like his classic rendition, but with a little modern Game of Thrones-era dragon thrown into the mix. Rodan looks a bit more otherwordly and menacing than his predecessors, and less like an outright pterosaur. And then there’s Mothra. The giant flying insect is the most changed, as she now looks much more like an actual insect and less cutesy. Consequently, this is the first version of Mothra that looks like something we wouldn’t want to mess with, which should make for an interesting change of pace from the mostly adorable Mothra of yesteryear.
We’ll be able to see just how these beasts all stack up on the big screen for real when Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters on May 31, 2019.
