One of the most absurd B movies of all time is about to get the remake treatment, as it looks like Syfy will be making a new version of Killer Klowns from Outer Space.
According to Bloody Disgusting, the network is close to securing the rights to produce a new version of the film, along with a new Critters movie. The Critters news is a little less exciting for a few reasons. One, there have already been several Critters sequels, and two, a Critters TV series is already in the works from the original film’s producers and director Jordan Rubin. So we’re not really sure how another Critters movie fits in. Killer Klowns, on the other hand, is definitely something to get excited over. The original film from 1988 has never had a sequel, but it’s still maintained a fervent cult following for the last 30 years. One reason for its popularity is that the film lived up to its title better than just about any movie ever: It really is about killer alien clowns that come to Earth from outer space and wreak havoc.
As of right now, it’s unclear if the new KKFOS movie would be a sequel or a reboot. It’s also unclear if franchise originators the Chiodo Brothers would be involved. The siblings have been trying to get their own sequel off the ground for several years, and as recently as 2016 were shopping around a TV series sequel, so hopefully Syfy is able to include them in some way. The network is also resurrecting the Leprechaun franchise next year with a new sequel, Leprechaun Returns, but its connections to the original franchise are pretty tenuous.
For now it looks like we’ll just have to wait and see the new Killer Klowns from Outer Space is going to be the delightfully campy movie we’re all hoping it will be.
