The first trailer has been released for the upcoming Suspiria remake, and it looks like it could be one of the best straight up horror movies we’ve seen in a long time.
We’d already heard rumors that Luca Guadagnino’s remake of the classic 1977 original from Dario Argento is one of the scariest films ever made, and this new trailer certainly isn’t dissuading us from believing that. The film follows the same rough plot as the original involving a European dance school that moonlights as a murderous witches’ coven, but you won’t get any of that story from the trailer. Instead, what you’ll get is an intensely stylish and spooky series of scenes including an ominous metal hook, a creepy levitating woman, and a person’s face being eaten away by mealworms. You’ll also get a lot of vamping from the film’s two stars: Dakota Johnson as American dancer Susie Bannion, who comes to attend the dance school and learns the horrifying truth about it; and Tilda Swinton as Madame Blanc, the sinister head of the school. All of this is backed by Thom Yorke’s disturbingly moody — and decidedly retro — score, and supported by a color palette that suggests a much more somber tone than the brilliant bright colors of the original. The trailer, which observes the old horror technique of implying what’s scary rather than showing it outright, stands in stark contrast to the footage of the film that was screened at CinemaCon. There, a particularly gruesome scene was shown where a woman was vividly torn in half, but that kind of gore is absent here. If the new film manages to find a way to balance those two aspects of horror filmmaking, tension-building and shocking revulsion, then it could really end up being a true classic and even surpassing the original.
