We of course love a good creature feature here at COMET, especially those that feature oversized insects, which is why we’re so excited about the new giant ant movie It Came from the Desert.
The film is an adaptation of the 1989 video game of the same name, both of which are tributes to 1950s B-movies. The giant ants can trace their history to the 1954 classic Them!, while the movie’s title is a reference to the 1953 alien thriller It Came from Outer Space. And while the film’s main inspiration comes from the 1950s, it channels some more modern classics in two recently-released clips.
In a clip released by Bloody Disgusting, the film seems to reference Aliens with our protagonists entering the ants’ den and finding a room filled with giant, creepy, glowing eggs. There’s a good deal of camp in the scene, but there’s also a considerable amount of tension, and it’s topped off with a gun-blasting badass (no, it’s not Sigourney Weaver). Check it out below.
Another clip, this one released by Dread Central, has some serious Jurassic Park vibes. It features two of the protagonists in an industrial kitchen (sound familiar?) as they’re stalked by velociraptors, err, giant ants. The clip is so on the nose in its reference that one of the characters even calls it out specifically in the scene.
The movie definitely looks like a lot of fun, and as you can see from its official synopsis below, it’s not shying away from its references to both ’50s and ’80s culture:
