Everything old is new again, even She-Ra, the 1980s He-Man spinoff that’s being rebooted in a brand new series from DramWorks and Netflix. The She-Ra of old is hopelessly outdated, so we’re pretty curious as to just how this new series is going to update the material in an interesting way, and now Netflix is giving us our first look at just what to expect.
The streaming service has released the first official photo from the series, and while it doesn’t give us a ton to go on, it admittedly looks pretty cool. The photo is really a poster for the series, and it features an outline of She-Ra — looking decidedly tougher than her ’80s incarnation, think the Jane Foster version of Thor from Marvel Comics — holding her Sword of Protection aloft as a rainbow of awesomeness shoots out of it. In the image, she’s perched on a cliff in what we assumed is Etheria, but it looks more like Pandora from Avatar. All of this is accompanied by the slogan “A HERO WILL RISE.” Check it out below.
While the original series was called She-Ra: Princess of Power, the reboot is titled She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which suggests the supporting cast of super-powered women of the Great Rebellion will have a larger role in the new series. Those other characters include returning favorites like Glimmer (Karen Fukuhara), Catra (AJ Michalka), Bow (Marcus Scribner), Angella (Reshma Shetty), Shadow Weaver (Lorraine Toussaint), Hordak (Keston John), Scorpia (Lauren Ash), Entrapta (Christine Woods), Perfuma (Genesis Rodriguez), Sea Hawk (Jordan Fisher), Mermista (Vella Lovell), Frosta (Merit Leighton), Castaspella (Sandra Oh), and Netossa (Krystal Joy Brown). Many members of the cast, as well as Aimee Carrero as Adora/She-Ra, can be seen in the below cast photo released by Netflix.

The reboot looks to follow the success of Netflix’s fellow ’80s reboot, Voltron: Legendary Defender, which is set to kick off its sixth season this June. This version of She-Ra will see Adora as an orphan member of the Evil Horde — rather than the royal twin sister of Eternia’s Prince Adam/He-Man — who falls in with the Great Rebellion and ends up leading the resistance against the tyrannical ruler Hordak. No word yet on when She-Ra and the Princesses of Power will premiere, but it’s expected to debut sometime this year.
