In recent years, Las Vegas’ CinemaCon has become yet another space for studios to tease their upcoming films, and this year was no exception. Of all the major films previewed at this year’s convention, perhaps none created as much buzz as the next Terminator movie, which had its official title revealed.
The sixth Terminator movie, due out next year, will simply be called… Terminator. OK, so it’s not quite as exciting as we envisioned, but it’s definitely better than the oddly misspelled Terminator: Genisys. It also seems to represent the simplification of the franchise. Terminator is meant to be a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and will ignore the events that took place in the previous three Terminator films. The film features the return to the franchise of Linda Hamilton, who portrayed Sarah Connor in the first two Terminator movies. Those two films were the only ones to be directed by franchise originator James Cameron, who is now returning as producer for the new film — his first contribution to the series since T2. And it goes without saying that Arnold Schwarzenegger will also return for the film.

It’s hard not to notice the similarities between this new Terminator film and the upcoming Predator movie. That film also takes place after the second film in its franchise while ignoring its later sequels, and even the naming conventions are similar. The new Predator film is called The Predator, adding a “the” onto the 1987 original’s title, Predator. Terminator does the exact opposite, dropping the “the” from 1984’s The Terminator. Both films also feature connections to their past, with Cameron producing Terminator and original Predator co-star Shane Black directing The Predator. Sadly, though, just one of the films features Arnold.
In other Terminator news, the film has brought on Brett Azar, who portrayed the young T-800 in Terminator: Genisys, according to The Terminator Fans. That film’s fight scene between him and present day Arnold was easily the best part of Genisys, and his signing seems to signal that a young T-800 could make an appearance in Terminator as well.
Terminator hits theaters on November 22nd, 2019.
