Asian Zombie Hit ‘Train to Busan’ Is Heading to Virtual Reality

It’s tough to do something different and exciting in the zombie movie genre these days, given the oversaturation of the living dead in the industry over the past few years. But Korean film Train to Busan managed to do just that in 2016. By setting their action largely on a moving train, a new claustrophobic and stressful element was introduced to the stale zombie formula, setting the film apart and making for one of the best zombie pop culture experiences in recent memory. Now, that experience is about to get even better.

Train to Busan is set to be adapted in a new virtual reality form that promises to be the most terrifying zombie media experience ever seen. Content Panda has reached a deal on behalf of the film’s studio, Next Entertainment World, to adapt the movie in a VR realm with Singapore-based Vividthree productions. It’s not clear yet what type of VR adaptation this will be — it could be a video game or some sort of location-based attraction — but it’s certain to be terrifying.

“We believed in the possibilities because Train to Busan, a film that has mesmerized audiences in Asia and beyond, deserves to be adapted into a multi-sensory format,” said Vividthree CEO Charles Yeo, according to Variety. “That would allow fans of the film to experience the zombie apocalypse action thriller in virtual reality.” Another big believer in the potential of VR is apparently the Singaporean government, who are financing the development of the technology in the country.

Whatever the VR adaptation of Train to Busan ends up being, it’s expected to roll out in Singapore and Malaysia to start, with the potential of then expanding to a worldwide audience.
