The X-Files has returned for its eleventh season, but before Agents Mulder and Scully begun their most recent alien-hunting adventures, at least one grey has made its way into our world — or so it seems.
No, we’re not talking about the Pentagon’s recently-revealed UFO research program, we’re instead referring to an amazing prank/piece of viral marketing that filmmaker Michael Krivicka and the good people at Fox executed in New York City late last year. The three-stage prank involved animatronic aliens being placed inside newspaper dispensers on a Manhattan street and scaring the living daylights out of unsuspecting citizens. Phase one consisted of an alien hand reaching out from one box when people tried to grab a copy of the New York Post, phase two was a fully animated alien bursting out of a neighboring newspaper dispenser and creepily blinking, and phase three involved faux FBI agents and people in hazmat suits clearing the area and confiscating the aliens.
The prank is pretty clever (and timely!), and it keeps us excited for the continuing adventures in The X-Files… not that we weren’t already pumped for that.
