The Next ‘Terminator’ Is Coming Sooner Than You Think

After 2015’s Terminator: Genisys failed to reignite the franchise, the series is going back to the drawing board with the full original trio of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and James Cameron all on board — and it’s all happening way faster than we expected.

Speaking to the website The Arnold Fans, Schwarzenegger revealed that the film — which is directed by Deadpool helmer Tim Miller — is set to start shooting this June, and will continue until October. “We are starting to shoot Terminator 6 in June to the middle of October, so I am in that,” the 70-year-old actor told the site. “I am looking forward to coming back as the T-800 model. It’s gonna be great with Tim Miller as the director and Jim Cameron is kind of supervising the whole thing.”

The new film, which we weren’t so sure would even happen given Genisys‘ weak box office performance, plans to ignore the last several movies in the franchise, and will instead act as a sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, which was the last installment to be directed by Cameron. Schwarzenegger had roles in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Genisys, and appeared in CGI form in Terminator: Salvation, but none of those films appealed to fans or critics like Cameron’s two original films. And even though the world’s most lucrative filmmaker isn’t directing the new film, he is reportedly heavily involved in shepherding its story.

Assuming that everything goes according to plan, the currently-untitled sixth Terminator film will hit theaters on July 26, 2019 — nearly 25 years after the original debuted. Time sure does fly when you’re traveling through time.
