The New ‘Annihilation’ Trailer Is Way Scarier Than We Expected

The latest trailer has arrived for Annihilation, the new sci-fi/horror film from Ex-Machina director Alex Garland, and it looks far scarier than what we were expecting.

Annihilation‘s first trailer made the film look mysterious, inventive, beautiful… but not scary. The new trailer, however, keeps all of the unique elements of the first while adding in a number of jump scares and toothy beasts, including an apparent shark/alligator hybrid and an alien-like creature with a partial skull for a face. Star Natalie Portman also shows a different side in the new footage, as she’s seen blasting a machine gun at whatever monsters are lurking in the dark while giving off some serious Ripley from Aliens vibes. Check it out below.

The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, about a team of scientists who are sent on an expedition into a mysterious area of wilderness that’s full of mutated flora and fauna — and that kills or swallows up anyone and anything who ventures inside. In the film, Portman portrays the leader of the latest expedition after learning that her husband is the first person to return from a previous expedition, albeit in a coma and on the brink of death while suffering from an unknown illness caused by the area, known as “the sheen” in the film. Overall, it looks like Garland has got another smart sci-fi hit on his hands.

Annihilation arrives in theaters on February 23.
