First Details Revealed on ‘The X-Files’ Season 11

Season 10 of The X-Files surprisingly ended on a cliffhanger, at a time when it wasn’t confirmed that the series would ever return. Thankfully though, an eleventh season is on the way, and it looks like it’s going to pick up right where it left off.

During the Television Critics’ Association’s summer press tour, Fox president David Madden revealed the first significant details about the new season, and it sounds as if it will very much continue the narrative of the previous season. “When we start the [new] season, it will pick up right where the season finale from the last season left off,” he said, according to Bloody Disgusting. “So it’s that big — if you remember the ending, with the helicopters [circling] — it takes you right from there. We will then get launched into a very urgent adventure that will have a lot to do with William, Mulder and Scully’s kid. The search for William will thread through the show.”

And for fans who thought season 10 was at its best when it stuck to Monster of the Week episodes (like the spectacular “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster”) instead of delving into the series’ complex mythology, Madden has some more good news for you. “You will see the Cigarette Smoking Man, you may even see, maybe, tips of the Lone Gunmen somewhere in there,” he revealed. “There will be other characters from the previous mythology that will be reprised. Eight of the [ten] episodes will be standalone stories, more classic X-Files, Mulder and Scully and other characters plunging into [mysteries].”

So to sum up, season 11 of The X-Files will resolve the season 10 cliffhanger, probably unveil the significance of William, feature classic characters, and be 80 percent Monster of the Week episodes. Sounds like a plan every fan will be happy to get behind. And while there’s no premiere date yet for The X-Files season 11, it’s likely to premiere on Fox in early 2018.
