Star Trek fans descended upon Las Vegas last week for the franchise’s annual convention, and with so much new Trek content on the horizon, there was a lot more buzz at this particular event than in previous years. But, while things are looking bright on CBS’s Star Trek TV front, the future of Paramount’s Star Trek movie efforts remains less clear.
Karl Urban was the only member of the Kelvin movie cast in attendance at the event, and when he was asked whether or not he would be returning for the fourth time as Bones McCoy, his response confirmed he knows no more about the future of Star Trek movies than we all do.
“The ball is in Paramount’s court,” said Urban after confirming he would love to make another Trek movie. “There is a new head of Paramount Studios – a great guy – and they are just in the process of looking at their slate at what is coming up. So fingers crossed we get to make another one.”
Despite the fact that Star Trek Beyond represented a real return to form for Paramount’s Star Trek movies, the Justin Lin movie failed to meet expectations at the box-office. With a global box-office haul of $343m, ‘Beyond‘ represented a steep drop-off from the total taken by ‘Into Darkness‘, a movie which many fans deemed as unsatisfying. For that reason, Urban says that if ‘Beyond’ was to be his final Trek movie, he would be comfortable that he was ending on a high.
“That being said…if Beyond is the note that we end it on – as sad as that is – I am actually happy with that film.”
Personally, I would love to see a fourth Kelvin movie, especially given the way that Beyond ended by bringing Jaylah into the core team.
