Star Trek: Discovery took to San Diego Comic-Con today, bringing with it a brand new trailer and some big news that might shock some hardcore Trek fans.
The trailer, seen below, continues the solid work of its predecessor by showcasing the new Trek show’s stunning visual effects and teasing some curious plotlines. The footage was received with understandably rapturous applause, and it gives some more depth to the upcoming cold war between the Federation and Klingons as well as some extended screen time for the show’s more exotic characters.
But, it was something that was revealed during the panel and subsequent press conference that might just steal that stunning trailer’s thunder. Trek fans had been angry about the altered appearance of Discovery’s Klingons, arguing that it goes against what they know from the existing Trek canon. Now, though, it looks as like fans will have something completely different to fuss over, because star of the show Sonequa Martin-Green revealed some shocking info about her character, First Officer Michael Burnham.
As Martin-Green was explaining the relationship her character would have with Michelle Yeoh’s Captain Georgiou, she revealed that Michael Burnham is actually the adoptive daughter of Sarek who will be played by James Frain. Sarek is obviously Spock’s father, which means we just got given the bombshell that, all this time, Spock had a sister.
A sister is something that Spock has never mentioned over the course of the existing Star Trek stories, so does this mean that Discovery will be rewriting elements of the franchise’s canon? Not so, according to Kurtzman, who said that this apparent lack of continuity will be explained throughout the course of the show and, most importantly, be sympathetic to the existing canon.
We’ve still got a while to wait until Discovery premieres in September, but it would look as though there’s a lot to chew on while we wait.
