Just Try & Catch all the Movie References in the ‘Ready Player One’ Trailer

The first trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con today, and boy is it something.

The highly-anticipated film is the big screen adaptation of the sci-fi novel by Ernie Cline, and takes place in a dystopian future world where much of the population escapes their dire life by living in the OASIS, a virtual reality game where anything is possible. This is explained at the beginning of the trailer by our hero, Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), before things get absolutely crazy.

Once the action of the trailer shifts to the OASIS, it basically turns into a game of “spot that geek culture reference.” Freddy Krueger, the DeLorean time machine, the Ninja Turtles, and the Iron Giant — who Spielberg revealed plays a major role in the film — all pop up at one point or another in what looks like an insane mashup of movies, video games, and nostalgia. All of this gears up to what appears to be a climactic Mad Max: Fury Road-like road race/all-out war with loads of CGI-fueled destruction, all of it scored surprisingly well by Rush’s “Tom Sawyer.”

Ready Player One opens in theaters on March 30th, 2018.
