Nicholas Meyer is responsible for creating a movie which is widely regarded as the greatest Star Trek movie ever produced, and all these years later he’s still involved in the franchise.
Following work on Undiscovered Country and The Voyage Home, Meyer is currently serving as a producer on CBS’s Star Trek: Discovery, but it turns out that’s not the only Star Trek project he’s got on his plate.
Speaking to TrekMovie, Meyer was quizzed on what else he was working on, and specifically if he had any other Star Trek projects in the pipeline. His response, while rather coy, has caused a great deal of excitement.
One thing that has nothing to do with Discovery is that I am working on another Star Trek project, but I can’t discuss that either.
So what could this mystery project be? Well, it’s only natural to assume that Meyer’s cryptic hints are in reference to the planned sequel to Star Trek Beyond, details of which have been few and far between. The cause for that air of quiet may well be the disappointing performance of Beyond at the box-office, but that performance belies the quality of Justin Lin’s movie, so it’s not unreasonable to think that the Kelvin timeline will continue.
Coupled with the uptick in quality seen with Beyond, the addition of Meyer to the writing team could well see Trek fans feeling altogether more optimistic about Star Trek’s future on the silver screen.
In the meantime, take a look back at what can happen when you combine Meyer with Star Trek:
