Starship Troopers has long been a cult favorite among those who know sci-fi, and the film’s newest animated sequel looks like a blast. It’s too bad hardly anyone will get the chance to see it in theaters.
Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars is a CGI animated film that brings back the original film’s stars Casper Van Dien and Dina Meyer as Johnny Rico and Dizzy Davis, respectively, with Meyer making her first return to the franchise since the original film 20 years ago. The official synopsis for the movie is as follows:
“In Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars, Johnny Rico has just been demoted and sent to a small satellite station on Mars whilst the Federation attacks the bugs’ home planet. While trying to train his new recruits on this remote quiet station, the bugs show up in a surprise attack but the Federation’s Fleet is too far away to help. It’s up to Rico and his Troopers to save the planet and uncover how the bugs made it so close to home.”
Sounds pretty great, right? And if the description didn’t get you pumped up, check out the trailer, which admittedly looks like a video game, albeit an awesome video game.
Now, here’s the bad news. If you’re hoping to watch the human-on-bug action on the big screen, you’ve only got one chance to do so. Screenings are happening one day and one day only, on August 21, and there is sure to be lots of demand. Tickets go on sale here on June 19, and you can sign up to be emailed the moment they’re available.
In the meantime, there’s already a plethora of Starship Troopers sequels floating around that you might even know about. There are two live-action direct-to-DVD films in Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation and Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, and there’s also the CGI film Starship Troopers: Invasion, of which Traitor of Mars is technically a sequel. Who knew there were so many alien bugs needing to get squashed on DVD?
