Edge of Tomorrow is undoubtedly one of the best sci-fi movies to be released in recent years, but its quality was not reflected by its box office performance. While its $370m global haul wasn’t a complete flop, it certainly wasn’t a rip-roaring success, a fact that many blame on a bungled marketing campaign that just couldn’t decide on how to pitch the action-packed time-looping caper.
Initially named All You Need is Kill after the book it was based on, Doug Liman’s movie was given the name Edge of Tomorrow for its big screen release. After a disappointing box office performance, Warner Bros. recognized (all too late) that Edge of Tomorrow didn’t do the movie’s plot justice, changing the movie’s name to Live. Die. Repeat. for its Blu-Ray and digital release.
Regardless of how fans felt about the title (I personally preferred All You Need is Kill), the majority of people who watched Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt tearing into those alien invaders were all in agreement that they wanted more. Thankfully, Doug Liman has revealed that he and Christopher McQuarrie both fully intend to create a sequel, stating that they’ve even got a name in the books that should avoid any future confusion.
“We have an amazing story,” Liman told Collider. “It’s incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film. It will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat.”
Sure, it’s no All You Need is Kill, but it should be a lot more recognizable than the hum-drum Edge of Tomorrow title.
Liman also appeared to confirm that Emily Blunt will return to the franchise to reprise her role of the Full Metal Bitch aka Rita Vrataski.
Tom [Cruise] is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we’ll do it. But it’s not an if, it’s a when.”
In the past, Liman has stated that the next Live. Die. Repeat. movie would actually serve as both a prequel and a sequel, flitting across time just as much, if not more than its predecessor. Bring it on!
