If you weren’t already excited for the third and likely final Thor movie, you’re about to be. The first photos from the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok have just been released, and they are unlike anything we’ve seen before from the franchise. The pics give off an extremely colorful and campy vibe that is decidedly retro in its depiction of sci-fi and fantasy tropes. Think Masters of the Universe meets Ziggy Stardust with a little bit of The Fifth Element sprinkled in for good measure. Seriously, it looks awesome. You can check out the pics below, courtesy of Marvel Studios via EW.
Here’s Thor (Chris Hemsworth) sporting some warpaint, a new short haircut, and some cool ’80s neon armor and weapons. He’s also without Mjölnir. My guess is that the haircut is a sign that he’s been deemed unworthy on Asgard and exiled, and now finds himself in the fighting pits of Sakaar, since it’s known the film will partially adapt the “Planet Hulk” storyline.
Short-haired Thor again, this time with a sword, alongside new character Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), an Asgardian warrior and Avenger in the comics.
Loki (Tom Hiddleston) hanging out in the worlds most colorful bar with even more colorful company and cocktails.
Another bar scene, this one looks different than Loki’s, as Valkyrie hangs out with beer-chugging aliens that look like they’ve been lifted from Power Rangers.
This pic seems to confirm that Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), and not just the Hulk, will appear in the film. But I’m more interested in finding out where they are and why it looks so funky.
Cate Blanchett is the new villain Hela, and she looks decidedly evil here in her Lord of the Rings-like black get up.
Jeff Goldblum is yet another new character, Grandmaster, who’s an Elder of the Universe. I’m sure his performance will be bonkers, and here he is looking like the lovechild of Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy‘s The Collector.
Director Taika Waititi speaks to Thompson and Hemsworth, presumably to tell them to ham it up.
Waititi speaks with Thompson again, this time atop a retro-futuristic alien contraption.
The movie, which premieres on November 3, is being billed as an intergalactic road comedy. Color us excited.
