Cinematic universes are all the rage these days, with everyone from the Universal Monsters to Hanna Barbera cartoon characters lining up to join forces in massive multi-film franchises. One of the most exciting of these mashups is definitely the impending King Kong/Godzilla crossover, MonsterVerse, which may be coming sooner than we previously thought.
In a new clip from Kong Skull Island, which arrives in theaters on March 10, Samuel L. Jackson’s Lt. Col. Packard and John Goodman’s Bill Randa engage in a conversation about why they’re really on Skull Island. Randa reveals that he’s there to find proof of massive unidentified terrestrial organisms — M.U.T.O. — as part of the research done by his secretive organization, Monarch. Check it out below:
Now, if you watched 2014’s Godzilla, then both M.U.T.O. and Monarch should sound familiar to you. In that film, it was revealed that Project Monarch was founded to study Godzilla and other M.U.T.O. like him. In this film, which takes place some 40 years before Godzilla, it seems that King Kong has drawn the attention of the organization, which will likely put him on a collision course with the giant fire-breathing reptile somewhere down the road. And while we know that Godzilla vs. Kong is set for a 2020 release, we may actually end up seeing these two get together a lot sooner.
Kellvin Chavez of Splash Report claims that Kong: Skull Island has an especially awesome end-credits scene, and when a fan asked if it involves Godzilla, Chavez simply said, “Wait and see.” That sure makes it sound like Godzilla will show up in some form at the end of the film, maybe even in a scene where Kong and Godzilla come face to face. An appearance by the radioactive giant in the movie would certainly make sense as it would help lead into his own next big screen adventure, 2019’s Godzilla: King of Monsters.
So get excited because it definitely seems like we have entered the age of monsters.
