Colossal is the Kaiju Comedy You Didn’t Know You Needed

Kaiju movies are many things, but they are rarely funny, at least not intentionally anyway. That’s all about to change with Colossal, an upcoming comedy that’s got a premise weird enough to put it right on your radar.

Starring Anne Hathaway, Colossal sees a massive Kaiju wreaking havoc on Seoul, South Korea. The unstoppable beast appears to have an insatiable thirst for random destruction. But it turns out that destruction isn’t as random as it seems. When Gloria (Hathaway), a down-on-her-luck woman is forced to move back to her hometown, she makes the bizarre discovery that she shares a telepathic link with the Kaiju on the other side of the planet.

Colossal‘s premise might be weird, but it’s a movie that goes beyond simple popcorn pleasures. Nacho Vigalondo’s movie screened at Fantastic Fest last year and it got an extremely positive reception. Hathaway is joined by Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, and Tim Blake Nelson, all of whom help to make this an extremely funny movie, even without the telepathically-controlled Kaiju.

If you’re looking for a refreshingly original monster movie with a twist, be sure to keep an eye out for Colossal when it hits theaters this April.
