For many, 10 Cloverfield Lane was just a brilliant piece of suspenseful entertainment. However, for those who wanted to know how it connected to the 2008 movie, Cloverfield, it was a frustrating Rubix cube of a movie that refuses to yield answers, no matter how many times you watched it. With his new Cloverfield universe, JJ Abrams has created a cinematic world the likes of which we rarely get to see. It’s a world in which connections aren’t spelled out for us with post-credit scenes, forcing us to use our imaginations and, should you so wish, a healthy dose of sleuthing in order to put the pieces together.
Spoilers for Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane follow.
The execs at Marvel are famous for saying “It’s all connected”. JJ Abrams, however, prefers to keep his cards close to his chest. Despite a lack of facts, the majority of movie buffs believe there is a strong connection between Cloverfield‘s monster and the alien invasion seen in 10 Cloverfield Lane. Unfortunately, the Internet’s inevitably industrious approach to solving this mystery has failed to provide any theories that give a satisfactory connection between Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane. But that’s all about to change because a new video puts forward a brilliant theory on this whole, brain-aching mess of a riddle.
Created by the Youtube channel, Inside a Mind, the video trawls through mind-boggling web of viral websites that came online in the build up to 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s release. In doing this, the video establishes a number of strong arguments regarding where in the Cloverfield timeline the movie takes place, as well as the deep backstory behind some of the characters.
As it delves into real-life conspiracy theories, the video often feels like it’s dragging you down a bit of a rabbit hole, but if you stick with it for the full 20 minutes, you’ll definitely feel rewarded.
There’s no telling whether or not the video has hit the nail on the head completely, but if you’re looking to latch on to a theory, this is the most solid we’ve seen so far. And, given that JJ Abrams’ God Particle project is likely to add to the mystery of the Cloverfield universe when it hits theaters this fall, it’s not a bad idea to start brushing up on the details.
Even if you’re not too fussed about digging into the backstory of these movies, the video is still worth a watch if not just for the sheer spectacle of seeing how much research this chap has done. When the Internet puts its mind to things, it can really get sh*t done.
