After a lengthy saga spanning many years, George Lucas has finally nailed down a location for his planned $1 Billion Museum of Narrative Arts.
Following a number of setbacks, including a deal with Chicago falling through, Lucas was left with a choice between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The latter of which had already rejected Lucas’s proposal to use a plot on the city’s Presidio park, but returned with an offer of a plot on Treasure Island. Despite Lucas’s strong ties to San Francisco, the Star Wars creator and his team opted for a prime spot in Downtown Los Angeles.
The location, smack dab in the middle of LA’s Expo Park, places the museum right next to Lucas’s Alma Mater, USC, as well as a host of other museums. LA’s mayor said he and the city council went after the museum “with everything we had”, which isn’t surprising given the prestigious collection the structure will house.
As well as artifacts from Hollywood classics like Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz, it will also house a huge amount of one-of-a-kind Star Wars items. The opportunity to see the original Darth Vader mask and other rare items from the ‘Galaxy far far away’ will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors alone. Throw in other rare works from Lucas’s private collection, and you’ve got yourself a place that all movie geeks will be wanting to take a pilgrimage to at some point in their lives.
