It’s not often we get a TV series based on a book of sci-fi art, but that’s exactly what’s in store with the upcoming Tales from the Loop. The first trailer for the new series has just been released, and we’re happy to report that it looks just as gorgeous as its source material.
The series is based on the narrative art book of the same name by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag. Like the book and the role-playing game that sprang from it, the show is about a group of people who live above a particle accelerator called “The Loop” which makes virtually anything possible. As a result, those who live near the machine are able to take part in some pretty spectacular things.
The first trailer doesn’t feature anything too groundbreaking for sci-fi fans. There are robots, flying machines, and some bouts of levitation — nothing too out of the ordinary. But what sets the trailer apart is its tone. We’ve gotten so used to seeing sci-fi used in its horror or dystopian forms that it’s shocking to see something that’s presented as uplifting and hopeful as this. The Golden Age of science-fiction was of course very hopeful about the future, but as the years passed by and it became clear that humanity was not heading toward any kind of technological utopia, sci-fi reflected that and its visions of the future grew darker. But with this trailer for Tales from the Loop, it looks like hope for a better future is back in the sci-fi genre. And it’s a beautiful thing to see.
Tales from the Loop debuts on April 3 on Amazon Prime.
