Trailer for ‘Fantasy Island’ Horror Movie Reboot Shows It’s Not the Campy Show You Remember

You may think you remember Fantasy Island, the campy ABC drama that starred Ricardo Montalbán and Hervé Villechaize back in the ’70s and ’80s, but the new Fantasy Island reboot trailer is here to tell you that you’re wrong. Dead wrong.

The campy series, which did sometimes have a bit of a dark undercurrent, is getting rebooted as a full-on horror film, and the first trailer shows just how much can go wrong when someone is given the opportunity to live out their wildest fantasies. In this new version, Michael Peña takes over Montalbán’s role as Mr. Roarke, the purveyor of his customer’s fantasies. Lucy Hale portrays the protagonist, a young woman who is hoping to have her fantasy of getting revenge on her childhood bully fulfilled. Naturally, she gets a lot more than she bargained for. Other guests’ fantasies involve dead people being brought back to life, and anyone who’s ever seen Pet Sematary can tell you how that sort of thing turns out.

Check out the trailer below, and see if you can spot the first “de plane!” reference.

The new Fantasy Island comes from Blumhouse Productions, the famed horror movie studio, so no one should be surprised at the direction the reboot has taken. Fantasy Island will hit theaters on Valentine’s Day of next year, and we’re guessing a lot of couples looking for a romantic movie based on the title are going to be very disappointed.
