A new trailer for the upcoming Child’s Play reboot is out, and the movie definitely looks like it’s adding a whole lot of new twists to the familiar old killer doll.
The trailer focuses a bit more on the story, wherein a young mom (Aubrey Plaza) buys her lonely son Andy (Gabriel Bateman) a fancy new AI toy called Buddi because he has such a hard time making friends with other kids at his new school. Andy calls his Buddi doll Chucky, though it’s not clear if he named it that or if Buddi dolls come with their own unique names and identities. The dolls are made by the Kaslan corporation, which in the film looks like an Apple or Amazon type whose electronic products are omnipresent in people’s lives. The promise of Buddi is that he can control all Kaslan products, like a walking, talking Alexa on steroids, and this leads to some serious mayhem when the doll goes bad.
Chucky can control cars, drones, gardening equipment, thermostats — you name it — and he seems to utilize all of them to murder people. But in addition to these fancy and innovative ways of causing destruction, the new Chucky also seems to have a soft spot for a good old-fashioned butcher knife when he really feels like getting down to business. The new trailer also reveals that one aspect of the film will see Andy teaming up with some other kids (looks like he made some friends!) to try and stop Chucky after adults don’t believe what’s happening, giving the film some serious Stranger Things or It vibes. This makes sense, considering that the producers of the It reboot are also behind this film. Finally, and perhaps most exciting, the new trailer gives us our first chance to hear Mark Hamill speak as Chucky, and man alive does he sound creepy. Check out the trailer below.
Child’s Play takes over theaters on June 21.
