A24 has established a reputation for very serious horror movies that make you think. The Witch. Hereditary. Under the Skin. That’s why we’re so surprised that the studio’s next horror flick, Slice, looks like it’s going to be the campiest movie to come out in years. And we love it.
The first trailer was just released for the horror-comedy, and it sure is something. Starring Chance the Rapper, Deadpool 2‘s Zazie Beetz, Steve from Stranger Things (Joe Keery), and a host of comic actors like Paul Scheer, Hannibal Buress, and Chris Parnell, the movie tells the strange tale of a pizza parlor that’s built on a portal to Hell. One fateful night, their pizza delivery guys start turning up dead, and it’s up to two of their own deliverers to find out who or what has been killing them. Is it a werewolf? A ghost? A witch? All of the above?
The trailer offers the type of camp that just isn’t seen in modern horror movies; at least not ones produced by one of the hottest and most-acclaimed film studios for a wide theatrical release. And yet, here we are, with Slice looking like something that dropped right out of the 1980s and somehow ended up in 2018. Not that we’re complaining, the movie looks bonkers in the best way, and we’re more than a little curious to see just how crazy the full film turns out. You can check out the wild first trailer below, and start formulating your guesses as to just what exactly is going on in the plot.
Slice — which sports the deliciously cheesy tagline “Dead in 30 minutes or less” — is written and directed by Austin Vesely, and will hit theaters later this fall.
