Goosebumps book covers are iconic to anyone who grew up in the ’90s. The cover images related to classic stories like Night of the Living Dummy, Stay Out of the Basement, and Say Cheese and Die are forever burned into our brains, but one online artist is looking to leave his own mark by creating fake Goosebumps covers out of classic horror movies.
A man who goes by the username @maskman93 on Instagram has been posting loads of his mock up covers to social media for some time now, per Bloody Disgusting, and they’re pretty great. What he typically does is fit either the poster image or an iconic scene from a horror movie onto a faux book and then gives it a Goosebumps-style cover and title. For instance, Child’s Play becomes Why I’m Afraid of Toys; a riff on the Goosebumps book Why I’m Afraid of Bees. My Daughter the Demon works pretty great as a stand-in for The Exorcist; ditto for My Cat Is a Zombie! and Pet Sematary. Check out some of the covers below.
The work of @maskman93 first came to the attention of Happy Death Day and Truth or Dare producer Ryan Turek, who praised the artist’s Goosebumps covers on his own Instagram page last week. Maybe next R.L. Stine himself will team up with @maskman93 and actually get some of these stories produced, though some will be admittedly tough to turn into children’s stories — looking at you, Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
