While the American Godzilla franchise continues to grow, with a King Kong crossover on the horizon in the not-too-distant future, the original Japanese series from Toho is also producing films starring the big guy, and they’ve just released an awesome new trailer for the next installment, Godzilla: Monster Planet.
The new movie, which is entirely animated (Toho is prevented from producing live action films for the time being due to Legendary’s MonsterVerse) takes place far in the future, where Godzilla has lorded over a monster-filled Earth for 20,000 years, having driven human beings out. Now, the humans are returning to their home planet to make one last stand against the giant kaiju, and lots of destruction is guaranteed.
The first thing you’ll notice from the trailer is that the animation is beautiful. The film seamlessly blends traditional looking anime with flashy CGI animation for a very unique final product. There are lots of bright flashy colors and big explosions, and the animation allows the film to be far more bombastic than a live action film would be (judging from this trailer, the live action version would probably cost a billion dollars). It’s also worth noting that the job the animators have done on Godzilla himself is especially impressive — we’re not sure he’s ever looked better or more frightening. Check it out below.
Godzilla: Monster Planet hits theaters in Japan on November 17, and will be released worldwide on Netflix shortly afterwards.
