We still haven’t seen a full-length trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but it feels like one may be arriving soon. Especially now that new photos, characters, and a behind-the-scenes video from the film have all been revealed.
So let’s see what we can learn from the new photos below, courtesy of the latest issue of Vanity Fair.
Rey
Rey & Luke
Luke & Leia
Leia & Lieutenant Connix (Carrie Fisher’s real life daughter Billie Lourd)
General Hux, Kylo Ren, & Captain Phasma
Leia, Poe Dameron, Finn, BB-8, and new character Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), a Resistance maintenance worker who has a significant role in the film as one of the heroes.
Laura Dern as new character Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, a glamorous Resistance officer who clashes with Leia.
Benecio Del Toro as a mysterious and shady unnamed new character nicknamed “DJ,” whose real name is meant to be yet another mystery of the franchise.
Creatures of the Canto Bright casino, a new type of venue for Star Wars since it’s glamorous and high class rather than seedy.
More Casino Bright patrons. Director Rian Johnson said the new location is “a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief… I was thinking, OK, let’s go ultra-glamour. Let’s create a playground, basically, for rich a–holes.”
Part of Vanity Fair’s coverage included exclusive interviews with the cast, which provided some heart-wrenching details on how Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia would have influenced the rest of the Star Wars saga.
“[Carrie] was having a blast,” said LucasFilm President, Kathleen Kennedy. “The minute she finished, she grabbed me and said, ‘I’d better be at the forefront of IX!’ Because Harrison was front and center on VII, and Mark is front and center on VIII. She thought IX would be her movie. And it would have been.”
Those words will be a dagger to the heart of all of Fisher’s fans, but I have no doubt that Disney and LucasFilm will give her a fitting send-off from the franchise she helped make so great.
Finally, Vanity Fair has also released a new behind-the-scenes video from the film, which offers some great looks at the locations, as well as some insight from the cast and director.
