One of the most exciting new series coming to TV this year has got to be American Gods, based on the brilliant fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman. The show premieres on STARZ on April 30, and the network has just released a new full-length trailer that’s full of blood, surreal imagery, and overall awesomeness.
The premise of the story is this: A man named Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) is released from prison and meets a mysterious man named Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), who wants to hire him as a bodyguard of sorts. It’s not long before Shadow becomes involved in a war between the Old Gods of yesteryear — figures from Norse, Slavic, and other mythologies — and the New Gods of today, like Technology and Media. It’s an interesting concept, and the dichotomy between the Gods is on full, violent, trippy display in the new trailer. Check it out below.
It’s also worth noting that the trailer is packed with a ton of character appearances from the ensemble cast. There are glimpses of New Gods Mr. World (Crispin Glover) and Technical Boy (Bruce Langley); Old Gods Mr. Nancy (Orlando Jones), Easter (Kristin Chenoweth), Zorya Vechernyaya (Cloris Leachman), Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber), Bilquis (Yetide Badaki), and a bloody sledgehammer-wielding Czernobog. Plus, there are a couple of really creepy appearances by Shadow’s undead wife, Laura Moon (Emily Browning), and a version of the Buffalo Man even shows up in a dreamy, fire-snorting appearance.
Overall, the series looks like it could be one of the strangest and bloodiest shows on TV — which could potentially add up to create a modern classic.
