Ridley Scott has not exactly been coy about his plans to make more Alien movies. Just a couple of weeks ago, the British director suggested he could keep the franchise going for up to six more movies, suggesting there’s a lot more mythology to tap into. While Alien: Covenant is still a few months from release, Scott’s keen that we don’t endure another five-year wait for the next installment in the Xenomorph storyline. It’s thought that the script for the next movie is almost complete, and a 2018 production date is looking likely barring any disasters with at the box office.
However, in a recent interview, Scott might just have revealed that he’s got more than just a rough roadmap of a story prepared, potentially letting slip an ominous-sounding title that could reveal a few clues about the future of the franchise.
Here’s what the director said in a conversation with Fandango:
There will be another one before we kind of literally and logically, clockwise, back into the rear back head of [the original] Alien….
It will go Prometheus, Awakening, Covenant… fairly integral where this colonization ship is on the way….
Alien: Awakening not only has a nice ring to it, it’s also logical given this new series of movies is driving head on into the original Alien movie. However, and this might just be a slip of the tongue, Scott seems to suggest that Awakening will come before Covenant? That would be an odd approach to telling a story that is, as Scott has led us to believe, it’s own self-contained trilogy.
Regardless of the timeline for Awakening, Scott believes that once it’s complete he can go on to start forming a whole new Alien trilogy –bringing the new wave of movies to a grand total of six. Where that trilogy will fall in the timeline is not yet known, but it’s unlikely that it will come after the events of Alien or Aliens, as Scott feels that’s a path which has already been trodden by the likes of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.
