Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 will no doubt be a funny and action-packed visual extravaganza, but it looks like the film will have an even bigger focus on special effects than we thought. In fact, it’s going to feature the biggest visual effect ever put on film.
It was already known that Starlord’s father in the movie will be revealed as Ego the Living Planet, a literal living planet from Marvel Comics, and that the film is doing a new take on the character with Kurt Russell playing him in human form. But, the planet itself is going to make an appearance as well, and according to director James Gunn, Ego in planet form is going to be the most impressive thing any moviegoer has ever seen from a technical standpoint. “We have over a trillion polygons on Ego’s planet,” Gunn told Empire, referencing the building blocks of 3D animation. “It’s the biggest visual effect of all time. There’s nothing even close to it. Which is cool.”
Just for reference, here’s what the number a trillion looks like written out: 1,000,000,000,000. So yeah, that’s big.
There are also rumors that we may have already caught a glimpse of some of those trillion polygons going to work on Ego in the film’s latest trailer, which features the team on a strange, gear-like planet that seems to be, well, alive. Check it out below, and keep your eyes peeled especially around the 1:34 mark.
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 hits theaters on May 5.
