When it comes to sci-fi and geek culture, LEGO has generally done a pretty good job of producing new sets to keep us entertained. But, while the various Star Wars and comicbook superhero sets are a lot of fun, there’s a whole load of potential for Lego to broaden their geeky horizons. Thankfully, there is a way for sci-fi and science fans to influence this…
For some time now, Lego has had a system whereby fans can design their own models and submit them to a public vote. Should a model gain enough support (10,000 votes), it will be submitted for review by Lego’s design board. If the board gives it their seal of approval, the model will head into production and the designer will even get a cut of the profits.
Just this week, Lego announced that a mini-figure set based on the women of NASA (seen above) had been approved. But, because we’re never satisfied, we’ve sifted through the thousands of fan-designs currently being put to a public vote and highlighted a few of our favorites. Check them out, and be sure to go and vote for the ones you love.
Buck Rogers – Thunderfighter
A throwback to a true sci-fi classic. This model set designed by LuisPG honors Buck Rogers In The 25th Century, featuring the titular hero, his robot pal and the Earth Defense Directorate’s finest ship, the Thunderfighter.

Red Dwarf
Of course Red Dwarf deserves its own Lego set. The British Sci-Fi comedy is an absolute classic, and the fact that this fan-designed set has achieved 10,000 votes shows that there’s a lot of love for Lister and co. Too bad they couldn’t quite nail Kryten’s head-shape, though.

Apollo 13
Given the amount of cobbling together the Apollo 13 crew had to do just to survive, piecing together a Lego set in their honor is the least we could do.

Space 1999 Eagle Set
Oh Space 1999, how we love thee. The younger generation of sci-fi fans might not be too familiar with the brilliant Gerry Anderson show, but this Lego set could help spread the word about the adventures on Moonbase Alpha.

Voltron
Have you been watching the latest Voltron series on Netflix? It’s beautifully animated and has a compelling storyline infused with a whole load of endearing wit. This ‘legendary’ fan-designed set took less than a month to secure the 10,000 votes necessary to take it to the review stage, which hopefully is enough to convince Lego to put it into production.

Mystery Science Theater 3000
You probably know that we’re big MST3K fans, so you won’t be surprised to see a set featuring Joel, Mike, Gypsy, Crow and co. included in this list. Given the Satellite of Love’s popularity, we’re quite frankly shocked this set hasn’t received 10,000 votes already.
