1984 is Returning to Movie Theaters Next Month – Here’s Where You Can Watch It

“It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” The opening sentence of George Orwell’s dystopian classic, 1984, is among some of the most famous in modern literature. Almost 70 years after it was first published, Orwell’s book remains hugely poignant, with readers all over the world finding something to relate to in the story.

In 1984, Michael Radford took on the ambitious task of adapting Orwell’s book for the big screen. Though it wasn’t perfect (are book adaptations ever perfect?), a number of factors helped the movie stand out. One such factor was John Hurt’s brilliant portrayal of protagonist, Winston Smith. Hurt’s performance in 1984 ranks up there with some of his best work, so when the British actor passed away earlier this year, there was a great deal of sadness that he wouldn’t be around to witness a previously planned screening of his performance.

On April 4th, dozens of movie theaters across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Sweden, will host a special screening of 1984. Writer and Director Michael Radford has filmed an introduction and post-screening discussion for the event, which will seek to raise money for various local charities selected by each participating movie theater. Those screenings will now be dedicated to John Hurt’s honor.

There is, of course, a political element to these screenings. But, regardless of your views, this represents a brilliant chance to watch a piece of movie history back on the big screen and help raise money for charity in the process.

The number of theaters participating in the screenings is increasing all the time. Below is a state-by-state list of where you can catch the special screenings on April 4th.
