As a Sci-Fi fan, the Academy Awards can often be a frustrating time. Each year, a host of brilliant genre movies are seemingly overlooked in some of the biggest Oscar categories, such as Best Picture and Best Actor/Actress. However, one area that Sci-Fi and Fantasy tend to do incredibly well in is the Visual Effects category. Proof of that dominance is evident by merely glancing at a list of past Best VFX Oscar winners, but considering these are VISUAL effects, we suggest you do these movie titans justice by watching this video of every single VFX Oscar…ever.
The brilliant video condenses close to 90 years of cinematic mastery into just 11 minutes. Watching the video feels like a digest of some of our favorite movie moments, from the killer squid of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) to the brooding robotic shenanigans of last year’s winner, Ex Machina.
This year, genre movies are once again represented in a big way. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Doctor Strange, and Kubo and the Two Strings are among the nominees, but there was no spot for the understated (yet beautiful) effects of Arrival, which was also snubbed in the leading actress category for Amy Adams.
As for the previous winners, the category was dominated by action adventure movies until the 50’s, at which point genre movies like Destination Moon (1950) and War of the Worlds (1953) started to really push the industry forward. Other winners include some of science fiction’s most important movies, like 2001: A Space Odyssey, E.T: The Extraterrestrial, the original Star Wars trilogy, and The Matrix.
